Metal Stud FAQ

What gauge stud do I need for a 12-foot wall?
For non-load-bearing walls up to 12 feet, 20ga is the standard recommendation at 16" O.C. spacing. At 12' height, 25ga starts to deflect more than most specs allow, especially if the wall will carry any lateral load or heavy tile. If you're at 12'+ and hanging anything heavy, step up to 18ga. The AISI has published span tables for steel studs — if you're on a permitted job, your engineer will specify the gauge. If not, call us and we'll help you think through it.
What's the difference between regular track and deflection track?
Standard track is a tight fit — you screw the stud to it at both top and bottom. Deflection track (also called slip track) has taller legs and no screw at the top so the stud can slide up into the track as the structure above deflects. It's used in commercial jobs where the ceiling structure moves under load — if you screw both ends in that situation, the wall cracks the drywall as the building moves. On residential jobs with a solid drywall ceiling above, standard track is fine. On commercial jobs with a structural deck, ask your engineer.
What's resilient channel and when do I actually need it?
Resilient channel (RC-1) breaks the rigid connection between drywall and framing — when sound hits the wall, the drywall wiggles on the channel instead of transferring the vibration straight through the stud. It improves STC (sound transmission class) ratings meaningfully. You need it in multi-family construction between units, in hotels, home theaters, and anywhere the spec calls for STC 50+. Critical install note: do NOT screw through the drywall into the stud — if you "short circuit" the channel by hitting the framing, you lose most of the acoustic benefit.
Can I use steel studs for an exterior wall?
Yes — commercial exterior walls are commonly steel-framed. The key differences from interior work: you need heavier structural gauge (load-bearing), proper thermal break details to prevent condensation, and the framing is part of a designed assembly (engineer-stamped) in most cases. For residential exterior walls in Texas, wood framing is still the norm, but you can use cold-formed steel with the right assembly. Call us and we can walk you through what gauge and width makes sense for your application.
Do you cut studs to length or sell only full sticks?
We sell full sticks in standard lengths: 8', 9', 10', 12', and 14'. Field cutting is standard practice — metal studs cut fast with aviation snips or a chop saw with a metal-cutting blade. For large jobs that need a custom length, call us in advance and we can discuss cutting options. Most contractors buy the length closest to their wall height and cut on-site.
