Flooring & Tile FAQ

LVP vs. tile — which is better for a kitchen remodel?
Both work well — it comes down to budget, timeline, and what the client wants underfoot. LVP installs faster (floating floor, no curing time), feels warmer underfoot, and costs less per square foot installed. Tile is harder, more scratch-resistant, stays cooler in Houston summers, and lasts longer if properly installed. If the client is selling the house, tile often reads as higher-end. If they're staying and want a fast remodel, LVP is hard to beat.
What thinset do I need for large-format porcelain tile?
Any tile over 15 inches on any side requires a large-format (medium-bed) thinset — standard thinset won't give you enough coverage and the tile will rock or crack. You also need to back-butter large-format tiles and use a notched trowel sized for the tile. We stock large-format thinset and can recommend the right trowel notch size based on your specific tile. If you're unsure, call us before you start mixing.
Can LVP be installed over existing tile?
Yes, with conditions. The existing tile needs to be flat (no more than 3/16" variation over 10 feet), fully bonded (no hollow spots or cracked tiles), and clean. If the existing tile is in good shape, floating LVP over it is one of the cleanest and fastest installs you can do. If the tile is cracked, hollow, or uneven, you'll need to remove it or self-level before installing. We carry self-leveling compound if you need to flatten before laying LVP.
Do I need underlayment under LVP?
It depends on the product. Many LVP planks come with an attached underlayment — in that case, you do NOT add a second layer (double underlayment causes the click-lock joints to flex and fail). For LVP without attached underlayment, add a thin foam or cork underlayment. Over concrete on grade or below grade, add a vapor barrier underlayment to block moisture. We carry both types and can advise based on the specific LVP you're using.
How do I order for a large job or multi-unit project?
Call us at (281) 741-3588 with your square footage and product preference. We'll give you a job quote that includes the flooring, setting materials, and any trim or transition pieces — all in one number. For multi-unit projects, we can stage deliveries by phase so you're not storing 5,000 sq ft on-site when you're only on unit 1. Contractor accounts get net terms on approved credit.
