Acoustical Ceiling FAQ

What's the difference between 15/16" and 9/16" grid?
The numbers refer to the visible flange width of the T-bar grid. 15/16" is the standard grid used in most commercial and residential installations — it's the most common and lowest cost. 9/16" narrow profile has a slimmer look for a more modern aesthetic. Both accept standard 2×2 and 2×4 tiles, but make sure your tiles are rated for the profile you're using. Most Armstrong and USG tiles work with both.
Do I need Class A fire-rated tiles for my commercial job?
In most commercial applications, yes — building code requires a Class A (ASTM E84) ceiling in occupied spaces. This includes offices, retail, restaurants, healthcare, schools, and similar occupancies. Residential use is generally more flexible. If you're unsure, your local building inspector or project architect will have the exact spec. We stock Class A-rated tiles across all major product lines.
What tiles do you recommend for a restaurant or commercial kitchen?
For kitchens and food service spaces you need moisture-resistant tiles rated for high relative humidity (90%+) and grease resistance. We carry fiberglass and mineral fiber panels that meet these requirements. For health department compliance, look for panels with a cleanable, washable surface. Call us with your specific application and we'll match you to the right product.
Can I mix 2×2 and 2×4 tiles in the same grid?
Yes — a 2×4 grid can accept both 2×4 tiles and pairs of 2×2 tiles (with the appropriate 2-ft cross tees added). This is common in spaces that transition between areas. You'll need main tees every 4 ft, 4-ft cross tees for the 2×4 layout, and additional 2-ft cross tees where you want 2×2 panels. We can help you figure out the grid layout and quantities.
Do you carry hanger wire and ceiling anchors?
Yes. We stock hanger wire (12-gauge pre-cut and spools), screw eyes, toggle bolts, and concrete anchors for attaching the grid to structure above. We also carry hold-down clips for seismic zones and light-duty ceiling applications. If you're planning a full grid installation, call us with your ceiling height and bay spacing and we'll help you estimate the hardware.
